Violence has once again erupted in Papua. This follows a tragic incident where West Papua separatists kill police officer Bripda Oktovianus Buara. The shooting occurred in Dekai District, Yahukimo. This is in the Highland Papua Province, Indonesia. The event happened on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
Official Confirms Attack
Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani confirmed the attack. He is the Head of Operation Damai Cartenz 2025. The armed group shot Bripda Oktovianus Buara. He was passing through the Seradala Street area. Medics rushed the victim to Dekai Hospital. Unfortunately, they could not save his life. Faizal said this attack shows how West Papua separatists kill police. They deliberately target security forces to create terror.
Separatist Group Claims Responsibility
The police are now pursuing the perpetrators. They have already identified the suspects involved. Bripda Oktovianus is the 11th security officer killed in 2025. This data from the Damai Cartenz Task Force highlights a grim pattern. West Papua separatists kill police to achieve their goals. TPNPB spokesperson Sebby Sambom confirmed their involvement. He claimed responsibility for the killing on Monday. Their statement confirms that West Papua separatists kill police.
Sambom issued a stern warning to all civilians. “Do not cooperate with Indonesian security forces,” he said. TPNPB stated their ‘Cannibal Battalion’ carried out the attack. They operate under the Kodap XVI Yahukimo command.
The incident sparked strong condemnation from many groups. Yonas Nussy, a local community leader, deplored the unsettling actions of the West Papua Separatists.
“We want peace in Papua,” he said. “Actions like this only worsen the situation.”
