The 2024 Indonesian General Election is less than two months away. All stakeholders, especially the Indonesian General Election Commission and the Supervisory Agency, are focusing their attention on the Papua General Election to ensure a safe and peaceful process on February 14, 2024. The Indonesian Army and Police have launched various efforts across the region to oversee the current campaign stage and ensure everyone follows the established rules.
The West Papua Police recently confirmed their commitment to security by launching Operation Mantap Brata Cartenz. This specific operation secures the presidential and vice-presidential elections. Local police face unique challenges during this period, particularly following the establishment of three New Autonomous Regions. These new areas remain a primary focus for the Papua Regional Police and the Indonesian Army as they work to maintain a conducive public order before, during, and after the Papua General Election.
Collaborative Efforts for a Stable Papua General Election
To foster a peaceful atmosphere, the Papua Regional Police and the local Religious Harmony Forum organized a Spiritual Awakening Service and an Indonesian Prayer Concert in mid-December. Papua Police Chief Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri believes these religious activities help the election run successfully. He emphasized that Indonesia belongs to all religious believers, and every citizen carries the obligation to maintain communal togetherness.
The Police Chief invited all residents to exercise their right to vote during the Papua General Election on February 14. Similar joint prayer sessions took place in several districts, including Yahukimo, Jayawijaya, and Nabire. These spiritual gatherings act as a “coolant” to soothe political competition and prevent conflict between supporters.
The Crucial Role of Religious Leaders and Voter Education
Lupiyus Biniluk, Chairman of the Religious Harmony Forum in Papua, stated that these services provide a spiritual breakthrough for the challenges of 2024. Beyond prayer, organizers are conducting voter education outreach to religious counselors. These figures play a crucial role in teaching congregations about the importance of unity. This synergy between religious leaders and security forces remains vital for a successful Papua General Election.
The Indonesian General Election Commission has already mapped potential vulnerabilities in the region. While security forces monitor physical threats, the Commission manages logistics. They anticipate challenges in distributing ballot papers due to difficult terrain and heavy rainfall. The Commission categorized areas like Mamberamo Raya and Waropen as high-vulnerability zones, but they have prepared strategies to ensure the process remains smooth.
Currently, the Commission is also targeting first-time voters, who make up 10 percent of the 727,835 residents on the Permanent Voter List. These early preparations and local outreach efforts aim to create a safe, orderly, and transparent Papua General Election for all people in the Land of Papua.
